5 Photography Tips That All Bloggers Need To Read

Studies show that readers respond best to blog posts with pictures and videos on them and they’re likely to switch off pretty quickly if the post is all text. But it’s not as simple as just putting any old picture on there, they need to be good quality photos. It’s especially important if you’re writing posts about food and you want to show people pictures, or you’re writing a travel blog and you want to share your experience. The problem is, you’re a blogger, not a photographer. You might not necessarily know what you’re doing when it comes to taking photos. But don’t worry, just read these great tips and you’ll be taking better photos for your blog in no time.

Invest In A Good Camera

The cameras on phones are very good these days and you can take some good photos with them. However, if you want professional looking pictures and you want to be able to focus your shots properly, you’ll need a proper camera. Investing money in your blog is very important if it’s going to be a success and a good camera is one of the first purchases you should make. You don’t have to buy the most expensive camera out there but you should get a mid-range DSLR camera, rather than a cheap point and shoot one.

Backgrounds

A good camera doesn’t guarantee good photos, it’s all about how you set the picture up. The first step is to pick a background. If you’re taking pictures of food, for example, you want a neutral background so the vibrant colors in the food stand out. When you’re photographing people, try to find an interesting setting so the background brings something to the picture. A photo of somebody standing in front of a blank wall isn’t that exciting. Try to experiment a bit with your backgrounds to create more interesting photos.

Lighting

You’re not a professional photographer so trying to get to grips with artificial lighting is going to be tough, and at this stage, there isn’t really any need for it. You can do plenty with natural light if you know how to use it. You need to find somewhere outside that is well lit, but not in direct sunlight. Late afternoon sun is usually the best. Always make sure that you turn off the flash if you’re using natural light as well.

Photo Editing

Once you’ve taken some good photos, you need to edit them properly and give them a little touch up. If you’ve got a Mac, you should already have easy-to-use editing tools on your computer but if you’re using Windows, you’ll have to pay extra for some good editing software like Adobe Photoshop. Giving your photos a proper edit will make them look so much more professional.

Check Before Posting

This is the most important piece of advice that you’ll get. When you’re taking photos and editing them, you might make mistakes. Maybe your finger was over the corner of the lens in one and you didn’t notice. If you start posting those photos with basic mistakes like that, it makes you look very unprofessional so always check photos carefully before you post them.

If you follow these simple tips, you can make sure that all of your blog posts come with brilliant photos every time.
